(This space has been donated to HIT by the Chronicle. What appears in this space does not reflect the views of the Chronicle staff or management)

The walk-in clothing center is being put to good use--such good use that we need more donations of winter clothing. Especially needed are the following items: men's boots, heavy coats and jackets, sweaters and gloves. You can donate clothing at the office, 2250 Euclid Ave., any time. Please make sure clothing is clean and in good condition. We aren't able to repair, mend or dry-clean clothing. The center also can use bedding and linens.

Direct Services also needs help moving items such as furniture and appliances for people with AIDS. Can you spare an afternoon or evening? Call the Health Issues Taskforce at 621-0766.

HIT also has opened a food bank at the office. We need canned goods, especially foods that are "edible," such as canned meats and fish, vegetables and fruit, coffee and cocoa, peanut butter and other items. If you would like to donate, please be sure

food items are not outdated or nearing the expiration date. The food bank also can use paper products, such as facial tissue and toilet tissue, as well as soap, shampoo and other personal-hygiene items.

You also can donate gift certificates for grocery stores (or donate cash to use for purchasing certificates). These will enable persons with AIDS or ARC to purchase perishable items such as fresh meat, milk, other dairy products and fresh vegetables. Donations of canned goods or gift certificates can be dropped off at the office. For more information, call 621-0766.

Artists and graphic designers: Education can use your talents for its various programs. We need help with posters, brochures, advertisements, flyers and other printed materials. Call the HIT office to discuss how you can contribute.

AIDS education is an ongoing process. Observe World Awareness Day on December 1 by increasing your awareness and by sharing information with friends. And make every day Awareness Day.

The Merits of Relaxation

Did you know that relaxation have significant physiological effects on you? Scientific research in the past decade has verified that relaxation techniques can lower blood pressure, decrease the likelihood of a heart attack, improve sleep, enhance concentration, and control hormones such as adrenaline. Relaxation has been used successfully in the treatment of ulcers, hypertension, chronic pain, intestinal diseases, asthma, anxiety, anger, and dental phobias, to name just a few conditions.

Relaxation affects a person so dramatically because it counteracts a reflexive reaction called the fight-flight response. This response releases a set of emergency mechanisms in the body that speeds the blood flow to muscles so humans and animals can either fight or run from an enemy. The emergency mechanisms include: increased adrenaline and steroid flow, rapid heart rate to circulate blood faster, faster breathing to take in more oxygen, diversion of blood from internal organs to the muscles, and perspiration of hands and feet to cool the system. This reflex Continued on Page 8.
